The Integrated Day Off-Campus Program
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

Master of Education and Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study

One of the top 50 graduate schools of education in the nation — U.S. News and World Report

Earn the same prestigious master’s degree or post-graduate certificate as our on-campus students — in a cost-effective, self-paced program that’s tailored to your professional interests and training needs.

This series of low-cost graduate courses for practicing teachers, offered on-site at the South Hadley Middle School in South Hadley, Massachusetts, lets you build a portfolio of skills and credentials while you continue working. Choose one or more of our off-campus courses each semester — supplemented, if you like, with a course on our Amherst campus — in relevant, practice-oriented topics such as standards-based curriculum, multicultural children’s literature, and education through movement. Regular counseling support by our program director helps you build a cohesive program and synthesize your coursework, preparing you for career advancement and greater effectiveness in the classroom.

Program Details

  • Master’s degree: 33 graduate-level credits. At least 18 credits must be graded; at least 12 must be above the 500 level; at least 21 must be taken through the UMass Amherst School of Education.
  • Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS): 30 credits beyond the master's degree. All 30 credits must be taken at the university within a four-year period; at least 15 must be taken through the UMass Amherst School of Education.

Licensure: The program is designed and approved by the university as an in-service growth master’s degree. This program does not lead to initial or professional licensure.

Fees: The cost of courses is $335 per credit. In addition there is a $45 per term registration fee.

Transfer credits: Up to 12 credits from other courses may be transferred into the master’s degree program — up to 6 graduate credits from schools other than UMass Amherst and up to 6 graduate credits from UMass courses (with the approval of a faculty advisor and the graduate program director). A transfer form must be completed and submitted for approval.

Waivers: Waivers for supervising student teachers are not accepted in the off-campus program.

Curriculum: The program has no pre-established curriculum. Instead, you may choose from a spectrum of courses offered by the UMass School of Education.

Typically, four or five courses are offered each semester. Course offerings are determined and posted very close to the beginning of each semester, so that content may be based on participants’ needs.
