There’s never been a more pressing demand for qualified science teachers. Yet few mainstream programs offer a cohesive curriculum that prepares teachers to create inquiry-based science classrooms that lay the foundation for future learning. Our online and field-based master’s and advanced certificate program for science teachers integrates cutting-edge educational methodologies with science content in subject areas ranging from astronomy to oceanography — all the while readying Massachusetts educators for Professional Licensure. Solidify your knowledge and build effective teaching strategies you can apply right away in the classroom in this comprehensive program renowned for its interdisciplinary, hands-on approach.

Format: Courses are offered onsite at Springfield High School of Science and Technology and online through UMass Online (http://www.umassonline.net/home.html).

Credits: All courses carry 3 graduate credits.

  • M.Ed.: 33 graduate credits required
  • Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS): 30 graduate credits required

About the certificate option: The Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (CAGS) provides cohesive, specialized training for teachers who already hold a master’s, without the commitment and formal examination of a doctoral program.

Licensure: The program prepares Massachusetts teachers for Professional Licensure (see above).

Fees: The cost of courses is $335 per credit for in-person classes and $400 per credit for online classes. In addition there is a $45 per term non-refundable registration fee.

Partners: UMass Amherst School of Education Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies; UMass Amherst College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics; UMass Amherst College of Natural Resources and the Environment; UMass Lowell.

Curriculum: Course content is based on the National Science Education Standards and the Massachusetts Science and Technology Frameworks. Disciplinary courses are often cross-listed under both education and the sciences.
