Arts Management: Connecting Art and Community with Learning

Build measurable skills with the nation's leading provider of professional community arts management training. Increase your capacity — as an artist, arts manager, board member, or civic leader — to create communities that support the arts and arts programs that build community. In a time of limited financial resources, our hands-on classes, intensive training programs, and consulting services give you practical tools for more effective planning, implementation, and management of arts programs that are successful and sustainable.

Program funding: The programs of the Arts Extension Service are supported through earned income as well as grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and the UMass Arts Council.

Programs and Services:

Success in a competitive market depends on your ability to think and operate like a business — whatever your creative talent. Our Artist in Business workshops give you the tools to build a sustainable career in the arts — from self-promotion to funding sources to legal issues. Workshops are offered throughout the year and are available on-site to community arts agencies by arrangement. Arts Management Online Certificate Program

Managing a nonprofit requires specific skill sets that standard business programs rarely provide. The UMass Amherst Arts Extension Service has a national reputation and decades-long history as a trainer of professional arts managers. Our online courses — based on our authoritative text, Fundamentals of Arts Management — teach essential practices in areas critical for long-term organizational success, including:

  • Board development
  • Strategic planning
  • Arts marketing
  • Fundraising
  • Financial management
  • Arts programming
  • Program evaluation
  • Arts education

Choose one course or earn professional certification by taking a comprehensive series. Discover concrete solutions from industry insiders and professional colleagues around the world — then get the most from your training by applying your new skills right away, with your own organization as a case study. Whether you’re a working manager, a key volunteer, or exploring the field of arts management, you’ll increase your capacity to run successful arts programs — without the time and expense of a long-term degree.

Program Details

Format: All courses are offered online. Students communicate with each other and faculty through e-mail, threaded discussions, and posted assignments.

Curriculum: Courses feature lectures and job-related field assignments on topics including planning, board development, fundraising, evaluation, marketing, financial management, and arts programming.

Faculty: All classes are taught by AES-certified instructors who monitor discussions, provide feedback on assignments, and help students understand principles and solve problems.

Course requirements: Coursework is hands-on and provides practical, applied skills to real life situations.
In order to fulfill course assignments, participants must use their work with a nonprofit organization as a case study. Most use the organization for which they work. Volunteers may work with paid staff in the presentation of their case studies. Students may also work with a nonprofit organization that is not specifically arts-related, such as a YMCA that offers art courses, a hospital that offers art programs for at-risk youth, and other organizations.

Certificate program requirements:

  • Certificate of Arts Management: Successful completion of four program courses
  • Professional Track Certificate: Successful completion of all eight courses

No additional fees are required for certification.

Credits: Courses may be taken for undergraduate credit for an additional fee or applied to a degree from University Without Walls.
