Over the past few years digital technology has changed the nature of photography and photojournalism. Virtually every photograph you see in print or online today is captured with a digital camera, processed in Photoshop and transmitted electronically from source to media, while Nikon recently announced it will discontinue the production of many of its film cameras. The revolution is over and digital has won. Learn how to create better digital photographs by shooting, editing, and critiquing five weekly assignments, studying how images are used in a variety of online publications, and exploring the technical nuts and bolts of file formats, resolution, and white balance. Each assignment is tailored to expand student understanding of basic photography techniques and to offer a glimpse into the real shooting world of photojournalism. Students should have access to and familiarity with a digital camera, a computer running Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or some other image management software, and a high-speed internet connection. Students who are considering purchasing a camera for this course should e-mail the instructor first. Foundation course for certificate requirement. Part of the Certificate of Journalism (offered online) but open to all.
