What media outlets and correspondents are doing the best jobs reporting on global energy issues? Where does the media go for information about Global Energy Issues? This course offers a timely and fast-paced look at periodicals, blogs, video, and imagery taken from maps and satellite photos. We will raise several discussion questions each week from our readings and encourage everyone to participate. The discussions will be led by instructors Art Clifford and Alan Hall. Professor Clifford is a founding member of New England Science Writers and has been covering science topics for over 20 yrs. Including teaching science reporting online for 5 yrs. Professor Hall is a retired editor of Scientific American and Business Week magazines, and he is an award-winning journalist who started Quad net. We will share some of the best journalistic writing related to the energy equation. Reading will include the work of top writers from The New Yorker; The Atlantic; The Economist; Nature; Slate; and National Geographic Magazine. Texts will be drawn from the 250,000 digital books, newspapers, and periodicals cataloged by the UMass library. Use of this extensive collection will save students considerable textbook money. They will be asked to purchase several inexpensive texts available from Amazon.com. Students will be expected to read one book each 10 days and several selected articles drawn from the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, and Financial Times. One final paper will count for 30% of the grade and the discussions will count for 70%. There will be an opportunity to write one book review for 10% extra credits. Part of the Certificate of Journalism (offered online) but open to all.
