The Internet, which has made the democratization of information possible to anyone with an online connection, has also melded the roles of both journalists and military intelligence analysts. This course is a real time state-of-play look at how both areas parallel, interact, and diverge from their former stereotypes. Only slightly more than a decade ago, reporters spent most of their energy interviewing political leaders and law enforcement officials, and military analysts prepared assessments based upon some public but mostly classified materials gathered from sources like satellite imagery and signals intelligence. Today the Internet has provided many means of evading signals intelligence gathering from the use of steganographic images in Facebook to Hezbollah wiring its own fiber optic network. Instructors Art Clifford and Proinsias Faulkner believe both journalists and intelligence analysts need to quickly learn the basics and understand the ways each craft operates when working with the same information. Both UMass professors have backgrounds in journalism and intelligence, and each has watched these roles converge since 1990. Part of the Certificate of Journalism (offered online) but open to all.
