The course seeks to introduce students to library and Web-based research techniques that will make them better journalists (or evidence-based writers of any kind). Students will use Web-based electronic and print resources to research and report on current events. Elements of the course include learning to search library catalogs, indexing and abstracting databases, and full-text electronic newspapers effectively; covering local and national issues; and employing a wide range of multimedia presentation skills by journalists (maps, images, audio files). Reporting and research topics might include: medical and public health issues; technology and society; crime and punishment; business and economic issues; public transportation issues; the War on Terror; and finally, the implications of the USA Patriot Act -- as we try to gain access to information using the Freedom of Information Act that may be declared "sensitive" by government agencies. A final paper will be required. The course presumes some writing skill and very modest experience with research online and in libraries. Part of the Certificate of Journalism (offered online) program but is open to all.
