Lu Butler Retires After 26 Years as CPE Academic Advisor Print E-mail

Lucinda (Lu) Butler retired from UMass Amherst on Friday, July 7th after 26 years of service as an academic advisor in Continuing & Professional Education (CPE).

Some 50 friends and colleagues attended a reception for Lu in the Campus Center’s Amherst Room, offering congratulations and farewells on her greatly deserved retirement. Several people who had worked with Lu over the years spoke in recognition of Lu’s care and nurturing of the many CPE students, particularly the non-degree students, for whom Lu’s counsel made such an impact.

Former CPE Executive Director Bill McClure spoke of his admiration for Lu’s skill in working with so many students and for her “taking them under her wing” to ensure that students received the needed support. Lu was thanked for her many years of dedication and in turn thanked UMass Amherst for what she termed “the best job I ever had”. One of her plans in retirement is to spend more time with her grandchildren. We wish her well on this new chapter in her life.

Lu says, "Being an academic advisor in CPE has been the best job I ever had. For 26 years, I had great colleagues, interesting challenges, and the opportunity to work with thousands of students. Who could ask for more?"
