CONTINUING & PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION

Conservation Law Enforcement Training Program

One of only nine programs of its kind approved by the National Park Service, this nationally recognized part-time training prepares you for a career protecting the environment in national parks and other recreation areas. Continue working while attending weekend classes and short-term field-based residencies that build skills in interrogation, investigation, the use of firearms, and other critical law enforcement techniques. Enjoy the support of like-minded colleagues and the hands-on guidance of enthusiastic instructors — UMass Amherst professors and seasoned law enforcement professionals — as you join our highly sought-after alumni with positions at state and national parks, the Massachusetts Environmental Police, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Forest Service and other environmental agencies throughout the country.

Curriculum:  Instruction and certificates are offered in topics including:

  • Law Enforcement Techniques
  • Firearms Training
  • Detention and Arrest
  • Defensive Tactics
  • Crime Scene Management
  • Search and Seizure
  • Accident Investigation
  • Federal Law and the U.S. Code and Constitutional Law
  • Patrol Procedures
  • Defensive Driving and Pursuit Driving
  • Pepper Spray

Schedule: Dates and Times for 2010-2011 Program are as follows:

  • Weekends (Saturday/Sunday):
    August 14-15 & 28-29; September 11-12, 18-19 & 25-26; October 9-10, 23-24 & 30-31; November 13-14; December 4-5 & 18-19; January 29-30/2011; February 12-13 & 26-27
  • Full Weeks (Monday-Saturday):
    January 3-8/2011 & 10-15; March 14-18 (UMass spring break)
  • Time: Varies depending on the lesson plan - most will be 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with some nights
    until 9:00 or 10:00 p.m.
  • Graduation:  Saturday, March 19, 2011 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Campus Center
