Bachelor of General Studies (BGS)
CONTINUING & PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION

The UMass Bachelor's of General Studies program provides you with a high quality, flexible way to complete the degree you started.

Whether you started your education at UMass or elsewhere, if you have successfully completed 30 or more academic credits and have a GPA of 2.0 or above, this is the program for you.

The BGS program provides you with the flexibility to:

  • Apply credits earned elsewhere towards your UMass Amherst bachelor's degree program
  • Work with an Academic Advisor to design a degree that meets your career goals and personal interests
  • Enroll full or part-time
  • Take classes on campus or online

This program is suitable for students of all ages and interests.

Maybe the degree program you originally enrolled in wasn't a good fit for you, or maybe life intervened. Whatever the reason, put the academic credits you've already earned to work for you! Earn a degree that you can customize to meet future goals, be that your career or graduate school.

Examples of past BGS concentration include

  • Theater Studies
  • American Political History
  • New England Ecosystems
  • Landscape Horticulture
  • Human Resource Administration
  • Marketing Communication

Once enrolled, you will work directly with an academic advisor to design a well-rounded degree concentration that combines classes from 2 or more academic departments. Your advisor is there to help you every step of the way, from selecting your classes each semester, discussing your academic concerns, to joining you at your UMass graduation ceremony.
