Credit offered through Continuing & Professional Education (CPE) is resident UMass Amherst credit unless otherwise stated.

Maximum Credit Limits vary by term and student level/status:

Summer:

  • Undergraduate and Non-degree students: 14 credits total for the term, not to exceed 8 credits in any session.
  • Graduate degree students: 9 credits total for the term.

Winter: All students: 4 credits

Fall/Spring:

  • Undergraduate matriculated resident (Ugrad/genereal) students: total credits based on your particular academic program; to enroll in any CPE classes, must have a minimum of 6 University-scheduled credits + 6 CPE credits, or a maximum of 8 University-scheduled credits + 8 CPE credits
  • Undergraduate matriculated CPE students: total credits based on your particular academic program
  • Graduate matriculated (degree) students: based on your particular academic program
  • Non-degree students: 11 credits

Students wishing to take more than the maximum allowed CPE classes in a particular term need to submit a Credit Overload Petition form with the appropriate signatures as noted below to:

Graduate Students: Request permission from your Graduate Program Director.

CPE degree program students:
Request permission from your academic dean or program director.

University undergraduates (resident students): Request permission from your academic dean for overload of total credits; request permission from the Undergraduate Registrar's Office for a different configuration of University/CPE credits.

Non-degree students: Request permission from a CPE academic advisor.

Note: Non-degree undergraduate students who wish to study full time (12 credits or more per semester) on a regular basis should apply for admission to a degree-granting program.
